The weather forecast made it sensible to go high the first day so we caught the train to Gornergrat ( cog railway). We spent a lot of time at the top enjoying the superb views. David and Camilla did the 20 minute hike at the top. Six of us decided to walk to the bottom following the New Experience walk directions. The other four walked down two stops, non – trivial given how steep it was.
The six going down set off first. Camilla and David a bit behind at first. The flowers were spectacular. We got down to Riffelalp without incident. The directions then sent us towards Grünsee. We should have looked more closely at the map! This was a substantial detour from the straightforward descent! It was a pretty route however and we enjoyed it. Grünsee kept being ahead. We eventually arrived and David walked round the lake taking photographs. The descent from Grünsee was long and steep in places. There was a choice of routes at one point and Chris and Carol who were behind took the different one from us. This entailed going under a station barrier to cross the railway! The rest of us had no real problem except being very tired by the end. The steep descent damaged several toes!
