Sukkertoppen

The morning was not very clear so we decided to do a beach walk that was recommended in our notes before attempting the climb of Sukkertoppen, the mountain we could see from our apartment window. We had an excellent walk with good views of sea eagles, whimbrels and a raft of mergansers.

After an early lunch we set off up Sukkertoppen. The top was still covered but it was clear most of the way up. The climb was straightforward with excellent views over Bergsfjorden. We did not go up to the summit as it was shrouded in mist and would have involved a chain climb with no rewarding view. We descended via the remains of an early failed attempt at a hydro-electric dam and then to where there had been a nickel mine (run by a Welsh engineer).
