In September 2026, 7 members of Sheffield u3a Walking Group R had a week in our favourite hotel Feistererhof in Ramsau am Dachstein. We had good weather on all but one day. On that day we were able to do a local walk in the morning, Leitenrundweg but the rain kept us in in the afternoon.
Arrival
We arrived on the Saturday evening. Three of us were in time to enjoy the evening light.
Panoramaweg
Our first walk was part of the Panoramaweg. We saw small water wheels in the stream, a mural inside the church at Kulm and a modern sculpture in addition to the views of the surrounding mountains.
Sattelbergrund
On the second day we did the Sattelbergrund. Sattelberg is known as the Children’s mountain due to its accessibility. We early on met the group from our hotel who were doing Via Ferrata training. We met at a water mill that is still functioning and they then set off to climb the steep slope to where they would find the Via Ferrata.
We followed the track round enjoying the views. At the Sattelberghütte, where we stopped for lunch, there was a miniature water wheel setup. There were also deer around.
Rittisburgrund
Our third walk was the Rittisbergrund. We stopped for lunch at the Sonnenalm.
Dachstein Glacier
On the Wednesday we took the cable car up to the Dachstein Glacier. The Alpine choughs were begging for food.
Guttenberghaus
On our last day, Stephanie, David and Camilla, took the track behind the hotel that ascended to the Guttenberghaus. This was a steady climb but the path was well graded. Towards the top there were traces of the snow that had fallen the previous night. It was largely gone when we left after our lunch to descend. We stopped at the Lärchbodenalm for tea and cake on our way down.
The others took the cable car in Schladming to the Planai summit.
