We started our walk by being taken to Chora – traditionally the main village of Amorgos. Nearly all the islands have a village called Chora. Demetrius showed us round the village explaining that it was deliberately higgledy piggledy to repel invaders. This village used colours other than blue for its woodwork.
Before we left the village we visited the windmills which used to grind the wheat. we were able to go inside one.
We then left the village and visited a monastery dramatically tucked against the cliff. We were shown inside with the many icons of various ages. Before leaving we were given some local liqueur and ‘turkish’ delight.
On leaving the monastery we began our main walk along the ridge of the island. There were places on the walk where we could see the sea on both sides. The walk ended with a fairly steep descent into Ormos Egialis, the port where our hotel was. Track of walk
The walk took us past a hamlet where a local man, disabled by a childhood illness, had etched sketches on the local stone.
