We arrived in Naxos in the afternoon. We first climbed our way up to our hotel – our luggage was taken up by a vehicle – and tried to get a feel for the narrow paved streets. After settling in Annie took us for a short walk, track of walk, through the town and up to a striking arch overlooking the port area.. This has been left standing, mainly because it is too heavy and difficult to move! Almost all the houses are whitewashed with blue window frames and doors. Apparently this was by decree of the generals who ruled Greece in the 1950s. The whitewash gets renewed every winter so the buildings all looked very fresh.
